Chapter Twelve - The Elephants of the Serengeti
The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?
David Attenborough
Elephants enjoy protection from poachers in the Serengeti. Their numbers are on the increase. This is good news. However, this is not true throughout Kenya and Tanzania. It is even possible that this increase in the Serengeti is due to elephants actually seeking the protection offered there.
There has been an 'epidemic' of poaching since 2007. Overall numbers of elephants are still on the way down.
On a happier note, elephants do love the facilities in the Serengeti, and take full advantage of the open-air showers.
This is one of the many good reasons to have evolved an elongated nose.
